I was born in U.S. but my parents and my family speak chinese (both cantonese and mandrian). I can speak cantonese already but I want to improve my cantonese. There are some things I still not sure how to say. I wonder if I should learn the tones because I just learned cantonese from being around my family. So continue putting your podcasts!

I love this website - Benson you are great - keep making these Podcasts. Learning Cantonese and I think these are really good! Its nice to hear the background on what people are using right now in Hong Kong - better than books which can be rather out-dated. Keep it up!!!! xxxx

good one thanks!
I've been living in Hong Kong for the past 2 years and picked up a small amount of Cantonese. I'm happy to have found these pod casts as they strengthen what i already know and give me new phrases to practice and learn.
Keep up the good work.

Hello Benson, I'd like to thank you for these podcasts to which I recently stumbled across, they are done quite well. If you need any help making lessons about phrases that people have requested, I would be glad to help translate it into cantonese as I am Chinese but my mother tongue is english. Let me know if you need any help in the future via email. - Travis

Benson, you rock, bro! Excellent effort! Since I don't see an e-mail address on the site for you, or a private comment box, I've got to make this comment here. I just wish you'd make the lessons more like the Pimsleur method or the old FSI Cantonese course. I mean, without hearing native speed spoken Cantonese or Hakka in longer complex conversations, a person isn't ever going to become proficient. I'm trying to understand the Cantonese in the Hong Kong movies, so I'm serious about mastering the language, not just learning a few quaint phrases. Of course this is easy to say when I'm not doing any of the work, so it's just a request from one humble fan. Thanks.

Hello again,

I just checked out 'yesasia' and want to listen to some cantonese music. I was wondering if any of the lyrics are available in English and Cantonese? This would be a great resource, especially for an aural learner like me!

Thanks again :)

Hi Benson! I feel I know you a bit now because I've been listening to your podcasts on my way to and from worked for weeks now and they are really great! I am in the US and my family is from Macao. I'm Portugese and a bit Chinese (Eurasian) and the first born here in the states. My parents spoke fluent Cantonese but never taught is for some reason. Anyways I want to learn it now and these lessons are getting me there. So much of it is familiar and I can almost order food now! lol Thanks so much for investing so much of you personal time to do this for all of us we really appreciate it very much!

Anyways keep up the good work!

Hey, thanks for the Cantonese lessons! Putonghua podcasts are really easy to find online, but I'm really interested in learning Yueyu :)!

I've just come across the website, so I don't know about the previous podcasts, but there is a really strange compression effect on the mp3 here; the kind of water sound you get with really low bitrate mp3s, though I don't know why, because it's 128k?

Either way, I hope to see a lot more interesting podcasts! Your Cantonese is really easy to understand and it helps a lot. In the meantime I'll look back at the previous podcasts and practice some more simple dialogs. Thanks again.

Hello there Mr.Benson! I am very grateful that you have made this podcast regarding cantonese learning.I am very much interested in learning cantonese because I am now working here in Macau wherein cantonese is the official language.I have downloade all your files and I have learned alot!I really appreciate your patience and hard work in doing this. However let me comment on the volume of some of the recording because not all have the same level. Some of your recordings have a lower volume than the others. Please try to check this info because it will be very helpful if the volume of your recordings will be of good and the same level for all of them.I hope you will take this constructively. That's all sir.But overall I am really happy I have found your podcast!God Bless YOU!

Hi Benson.

Came across your podcast on wikipedia when doing some research on the history behind Cantonese dilect. I'm half chinese and used to attend chinese school at the weekend when I was a kid. I also lived in Hong Kong for 4 years and still haven't managed to master the language. Your poodcasts are really easy to understand as you've kinda put it into teletubbie language for me!

From the above comments it seems I'm not the only one that really appreciates your help.

Keep up the good work.

Cheers!

Hi Benson, I'm listening to your Cantonese podcasts through iTunes. I'm trying to re-learn and improve my skills. I'm an American-born Chinese and I'm losing a lot of the language since I don't talk to my grandmother much. I hope you put out more lessons.

hello Benson, I am a ABC american born chinese born in San Francisco. As I grew up there, it was very easily accessible to get into the rhythm of learning and speaking cantonese. But I moved to Sacramento and moved into a mixed community and easily enough Me and my faimily just spoke english. Now I am trying very hard to get back to what I feel lost without within my culture and try to learn cantonese again. And I can not tell you how greatful I am, that you make time to make this all happen, you don't know how helpful this has been for me and you are affecting others the same way with your website and for that I thank you so much.

Benson,
I stumbled across your podcast on itunes and it's helping soo much. My fiance is chinese and his family speaks very little english. You've given me the gift of communication with my soon-to-be extended family. The scripts along with the podcasts are tremendously helpful. A thousand thank you's.
Best Wishes

Hi Benson,
I think the story book reading is the best direction you are taking so far. As one of the previous listeners noted, advanced material is harder to come by. By "advanced" I personally am referring to the vocabulary of a 4-5 year old native speaker, but spoken in a slightly slow and steady pace without any English.

I find material out there is like really simple, or it is just what you hear off the radio which is for adults which is way too hard. Story book telling, will really improve my listening skills which is where I flounder the most.

By the way, breaking up the vocabulary into a separate recording is a great idea.

Thank you for your help to all us "wanna be" gwon doon wa speakers.

I think it'd be helpful to your learners to add the Cantonese Chinese written along with your examples. Also, when you're asking how to say something, are you saying "點係講呀?", "點會講呀?", or what? It sounds like "點恩講呀?". 多謝.

Hi Benson,
thanks for the podcasts! They're great.
I'm a student in Sydney, Australia (studying maths too!). I'm an Aussie boy, but my girlfriend is from Hong Kong. I'm attempting to learn Cantonese, with the hope of being able to talk to her Father (who doesn't speak English). So please keep it up!

Hi Benson,

Nice Job on the site. There aren't many sources on Cantonese at all anywhere, and it would be nice if you could post more because I am sure somebody(like myself) got alot out of this project of yours.

That said, I've been studying Vietnamese for a while, and it's interesting how both Cantonese and Vietnamese speakers flip the L and the N around.

Benson, thanks for making this. Far too advanced for me unfortunately :(

I did find that if I read the story in English at the same time, it is possible to get much more of the meaning. The story can be found here: http://hca.gilead.org.il/ugly_duc.html

It's only by reading this that I knew this was only the start of the story, the full thing would probably take about 20 mins!

Half of it is too easy, and half of it is just right. It'd be much more helpful if you use maybe 15-20 words in each lesson and then include sentences or examples in which they are used.

Otherwise, I'll know the word, but might not know how else to use it.

Thanks!

the content is good, colors is a great place to start, especially for a newbie like me.

The volume fluctuated at the start but apart from that the sound quality was good, this is the best Cantonese podcast I have found on the net.
